Is Your Water Softener Functioning Properly?

Hard water contains a high amount of minerals, which adds to your plumbing troubles. These minerals tend to get deposited in plumbing pipelines, wash basins, showers, tubs, and other areas around the house. It is therefore recommended to install a water softener system in your house in order to eliminate these problems.

What Does The Water Softener System Do?

The primary purpose of the water softener system is to eliminate excess minerals from the water running through your plumbing system. This may be achieved by using ions to absorb excess minerals, turning it into “soft” water. Other equipment may use different techniques to attain the same result.

It helps you keep your plumbing lines clean and also works to reduce your maintenance costs. Besides this, household appliances like the water heater and coffee maker can also benefit immensely from the water softener systems.

How To Know If The Water Softener System Is Working Correctly?

Like most other appliances, it may take some time for you to realize that your water softener system has stopped working. But if you look out for the following signs, it might be possible to fix the problem in the early stages. Keep in mind that once the minerals have precipitated, they may lead to clogging and major plumbing repairs. A stitch in time will actually help you save nine down the line!

  • Are you facing troubles lathering your soaps and shampoos?

This is a clear indication that your water softener has stopped working. Hard water prevents lather due to the presence of minerals. If you observe that your soaps and detergents have stopped lathering lately, it might be the best time to check up on your water softener system to see if it is working well.

  • The Boil Test

Take some water in a pan and boil it for 15 to 20 minutes. Now leave it to cool for another 20 minutes or so. If you see white residues at the bottom of the pot, this indicates the presence of hard water in the plumbing lines. These deposits are in fact the minerals that are present in hard water. Check the water softener system to detect problems in a timely manner.

  • Clouded utensils

Your utensils appear clouded after they are left to dry on the dish stand? It is the excess minerals from the hard water that give your utensils the clouded look. Check up on your water softener system just to be sure. Suspicious deposits in the dishwasher, shower, tubs, wash basins, and other similar areas will also point towards a faulty system.

  • Discoloration

Have the tiles on your bathroom floors started to look slightly off-color? It is one of the first signs of hard water. If you are not careful about fixing your water softener system, the minerals might leave darker marks on the tile that may be more difficult to tackle. Even the harsh cleaning chemicals work to a certain extent.

  1. Since the softener is to remove minerals from the water, would not removing them wreck your pipes? That is the first thing that I visualized when I was reading your article. I’m sure that no one wants to be drinking metallic sediments and things like that. It also makes sense that no one wants to have their pipes wrecked by such sediments.

  2. Thank you for your detailed instructions on how to do a boil test. This is something that I have been wondering about for a while, but I just wasn’t sure how to get a concrete idea of what was happening to my water. This will definitely help me to diagnose my water and finally get it fixed.
