There’s More To It Than Locking The Door Behind You

Do you ever get out of the house on time when you go on vacation? It never happened in my house when I was growing up and it certainly doesn’t happen now that I have a family of my own. It’s tough to get the kids packed, itineraries confirmed, hotels booked and all the rest.

Of course, getting the house ready for a vacation is just one more thing on your to do list and it’s not a fun one. There is a lot to consider but it can be done simply if you follow the items on our list

• Ask a neighbor to pick up your mail every day.
• If snow is in the forecast, ask someone to shovel your driveway so it appears that you are home.
• Turn off your main water supply.
• Make sure your thermostat is turned down so you don’t waste energy while you’re away.
• Leave a light or two on in the house. Better yet, put some of your lights on timers to give the effect of someone turning the lights on and off during the evening hours.
• If you have dogs and need to put them in a boarding kennel, ask around for a good recommendation. Your regular vet should be able to point you in the right direction.

Once these issues are taken care of you’ll be on your way. Knowing that your home is secure will allow you to better enjoy yourself and hopefully give you the strength to get through another family vacation!
