Many older units will vent out the roof, but if you have a high efficient unit, it will be vented out the side of your home. Check to make sure the vents are clear of snow and ice. If they aren't, the furnace or boiler will shut down as a safety precaution and will prevent carbon monoxide from building up in your home.
