Did your furnace or boiler go out this weekend with all the snow we had here in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul area? If so, before you call a service company to figure out your problem, make sure the venting outside is clear of snow. Many older units will vent out the roof, but if you have a high efficient unit, it will be vented out the side of your home. Check to make sure the vents are clear of snow and ice. If they aren't, the furnace or boiler will shut down as a safety precaution and will prevent carbon monoxide from building up in your home.

Ever wake up freezing in the middle of the night? If you have either someone has taken all the covers or your furnace went out…again. Last time that happened, you called a heating company who came out in the middle of the night to get your heat on. Before you do that, follow these simple steps to get your furnace back on track. If you can, you’ll save yourself a good chunk of change in after hours bills and your family will think you saved the day.
First, make sure the panel is securely on the furnace. If it’s not, the furnace will not start up as a built in safety precaution.
It’s always a good idea to check the circuit breaker. If it tripped, your furnace will not be getting any power.
Next, check the venting outside to make sure it is clear of snow and ice. With all the snow we’ve had this winter many customers are finding their vents are partially or completely blocked. If this is the case, the furnace will shut down to prevent carbon monoxide from backing up into your home. The furnace will either be venting out the roof or the side of your home.
If the vent is clear, head over to your thermostat. Turn it as high as it will go. Next, go to your furnace and turn the power off (the switch should look just like a regular light switch). Wait one to two minutes then turn the power back on. This process will cause the furnace to reset itself and go through the proper start up procedure. If it starts up, make sure to keep the thermostat set high so the temperature on the thermostat doesn’t get satisfied and cause the furnace to shut down again. If it doesn’t start up, you can either put on a sweatshirt, throw another blanket on the bed or call Bonfe’s for help.

You probably haven’t turned on your furnace or boiler yet for the season, but before you do, there’s one important thing you need to do – schedule an appointment with a Bonfe’s heating technician to tune up your heating system and test for carbon monoxide (CO) leaks.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless odorless gas that can originate from your heating system. A Bonfe’s Precision Tune Up will test for high levels of carbon monoxide that may be dangerous to you and your family.
If you have an older furnace or boiler, a common source of CO can come from a cracked heat exchanger. This should be inspected every year to verify its integrity. If you haven’t had a tune up, but are concerned about CO in your home, you can also purchase a CO Expert from Bonfe’s. A CO Expert is a low level detector and alarm. It will detect the smallest leaks and notify you by a series of loud beeps. Once you read the level of the leak on the display, you will know if you need to call a technician, or in the case of a serious leak, get out of the home.
