It seems to take care of itself. I never have to worry about it. If it breaks down I’ll call someone to fix it. If the repair is expensive, I’ll skip the repair and buy a new one. Our household appliances get used everyday but most people don’t give them a second thought when it comes to repair and especially when it comes to regular upkeep.

If, however, you have 10 minutes to spare, you may want to check on a few simple things:

• The coils on the back of your refrigerator probably need cleaning. If you haven’t been cleaning them on a regular basis, your refrigerator’s efficiency could be paying the price.
• While you’ve got the refrigerator pulled out, check the water line to the ice maker. If it’s plastic, you may want to consider upgrading that line to copper. Plastic tends to crack which can cause water damage to your floor, walls and the ceiling below.
• If your oven/stove is not built in, check underneath to make sure it has anti tip brackets installed. These brackets will keep the appliance level and will eliminate any rocking or tipping.
• Washing machine hoses can fray and become weak over time. If they burst, you’ll have a lot of water to clean up. If your hoses are looking worn, you may want to consider upgrading them to stainless steel hoses.
• While you’re peeking behind your washing machine, take a quick look at your dryer vent. Is it connected properly? If not, it might be sending dust and debris into the air.
• Have you had the dryer vent cleaned? If not, your dryer is working harder than it has to and may be taking longer to dry a load of clothes – costing you more money on your utility bills. A clogged vent can also be a fire hazard if the debris build up is bad enough.

Do you ever get out of the house on time when you go on vacation? It never happened in my house when I was growing up and it certainly doesn’t happen now that I have a family of my own. It’s tough to get the kids packed, itineraries confirmed, hotels booked and all the rest.

Of course, getting the house ready for a vacation is just one more thing on your to do list and it’s not a fun one. There is a lot to consider but it can be done simply if you follow the items on our list

• Ask a neighbor to pick up your mail every day.
• If snow is in the forecast, ask someone to shovel your driveway so it appears that you are home.
• Turn off your main water supply.
• Make sure your thermostat is turned down so you don’t waste energy while you’re away.
• Leave a light or two on in the house. Better yet, put some of your lights on timers to give the effect of someone turning the lights on and off during the evening hours.
• If you have dogs and need to put them in a boarding kennel, ask around for a good recommendation. Your regular vet should be able to point you in the right direction.

Once these issues are taken care of you’ll be on your way. Knowing that your home is secure will allow you to better enjoy yourself and hopefully give you the strength to get through another family vacation!

The kids are in the car, the weather is perfect and your holiday season is going to get off to a great start – hopefully. Traveling for the holidays to see friends and loved ones can be stressful so before you head out of town, you should make plans to make sure your trip is as safe and as efficient as possible.

If you’re taking that road trip across country or are taking to the air, keep these simple tips in mind:

• Check the weather before you leave so you know if you’ll be running into any rain or snow that could delay your journey.
• Make sure to get your car checked over before you leave. Check the tires, fluid levels (especially windhshield wiper fluid) and get the oil changed if needed.
• Some extra food is always a good thing to have on hand in case you run into delays that extend your time on the road.
• Keep jumper cables on hand in case your battery dies.
• Have extra clothes (hats, gloves, boots) and blankes in the trunk should you need them.
• A small shovel can come in handy if you get stuck in a ditch or snow bank.

If you’ll be traveling by air this year, you’ll need to consider a few other things once you reach the airport. Take a look at what the Transportation Security Administration suggests.
