You probably haven’t turned on your furnace or boiler yet for the season, but before you do, there’s one important thing you need to do – schedule an appointment with a Bonfe’s heating technician to tune up your heating system and test for carbon monoxide (CO) leaks.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless odorless gas that can originate from your heating system. A Bonfe’s Precision Tune Up will test for high levels of carbon monoxide that may be dangerous to you and your family.

If you have an older furnace or boiler, a common source of CO can come from a cracked heat exchanger. This should be inspected every year to verify its integrity. If you haven’t had a tune up, but are concerned about CO in your home, you can also purchase a CO Expert from Bonfe’s. A CO Expert is a low level detector and alarm. It will detect the smallest leaks and notify you by a series of loud beeps. Once you read the level of the leak on the display, you will know if you need to call a technician, or in the case of a serious leak, get out of the home.

You had a busy summer and had a nice vacation or two (hopefully). Unfortunately, the days are much shorter now, the mornings are colder than they were a few weeks ago and it’s time to get ready for winter. There’s a lot to do around a home to get ready for the long winter ahead so Bonfe’s Plumbing, Heating & Air Service, Inc. has put together the following list to help you prepare.

• Remember to turn off all outdoor water faucets and disconnect all hoses. Some faucets have an indoor shut off and drain that need to be bled. If you need help with this process, give us a call. We’d be happy to help.
• Prepare your furnace or boiler for the upcoming heating season by having Bonfe’s perform a 21 point Precision Tune Up. Also make sure to replace the air filters on your forced air furnaces.
• Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms by pressing the test button. Be sure to change the batteries at the same time. If your alarm doesn’t work, call Bonfe’s for a replacement.
• Blow out and winterize your sprinkler system.
• Apply your final lawn fertilization for the season.
• Get the snow blower tuned up and ready before the first snowfall hits.
  Run all gas powered lawn equipment until the fuel tank is empty. Gas left in the gas tank loses its volatile components over winter, making them hard to start next spring. You are also removing flammable liquid storage from your garage.
• Clean out your gutters and downspouts of leaves and debris to reduce the chances of overflow problems in the spring.

These credits will help you get rid of your old, inefficient furnace or boiler and get you a new high efficient unit that will keep you comfortable and save you money on your utility bills.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall on Maytag dishwashers. The recall is due to an Dishwasher Recallelectrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element which may cause fires. There have been no injuries or deaths reported with this voluntary recall.

If you believe you may own a dishwasher that may be part of this recall, please read the recall notice sent out by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
